Gail’s Books
I’ve wanted to write a story about Army spouses for about forty years. Ten years ago, I finally sat and started writing. And here we are! THE ROOF ABOVE was published in February 2024.
It’s available through the publisher, Black Rose Writing, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble (Check out our ten-year-old granddaughter’s review, and BUY IT ALREADY!!)
It’s also on Audible!
I hope you enjoy this story!
Check out my memoir that chronicles my experiences in the second class of women at West Point. You can find it at Hellgate Press or Amazon. We each have our story. I just wrote mine.

When I read The Roof Above, I wanted to scream, “Kelly, run! Go home! Go find your other self! This Army life stuff is tough!” Then I reminded myself that some of us are born to be one of the many threads that will, in time, stitch together this magnificent cloth of friendship, admiration, duty, courage, love, support, and gratitude and it will enrich and engulf our lives and embrace us like nothing else imaginable. Thank you for the reminder, Gail.
~Mary Nethery Dailey, spouse of Ambassador and Lieutenant General (Ret) Dell Dailey
The Roof Above is a story we don't get to hear enough of. Told with authenticity and poignancy, the sacrifices and challenges of military life for couples and families are portrayed with honesty and openness. Young Army men and women balancing relationships and service are heartwarming as is their allegiance to one another. And in the midst of it all . . . finding true love. An interesting read you will not soon forget.
~ Lucille Guarino, Author of Elizabeth's Mountain
The Roof Above immerses the reader into a world less than 1 percent of our country has experienced by telling the story through the eyes of a young woman who falls in love with a soldier. Dwyer’s experiences as a West Point graduate, Army spouse, and mother of two combat Veterans shines through in her authentic and empathetic portrayal of military life. Highly recommended.
~Bob Mayer, NYT bestselling author, West Point graduate and former Green Beret
With the same clever humor and honesty evident in Tough as Nails, Dwyer captures the challenging realities of life as an Army spouse and delivers a meaningful story of love and loss, forgiveness and fortitude. Whether you live in the civilian or military world, you’ll feel like family under The Roof Above. There’s no other book like this.
~ Laurel McHargue, podcast host, award-winning author, and former Army Officer
